In 1968, in the midst of the Tet Offensive, Walter Cronkite opined on CBS that the Vietnam War was “mired in stalemate.” Watching live, President Johnson was reported to have reacted by saying, “If I’ve lost Cronkite, I’ve lost middle America.”
